Creation Theatre and Oxfam's one night of Shakespeare from Ramallah
Oxford's own Creation Theatre Company and International agency Oxfam teamed up to present Ashtar Theatre's production of Shakespeare's Richard II in Oxfam House, Oxford, for the Shakespeare's Globe festival 'Globe to Globe', as part of the Olympic celebrations
Performed in Arabic, the cast took this classic play of power, politics and insurrection and infused it with the tumultuous energy of the Arab Spring.
The performance ran for a month in Jericho in occupied Palestinian territory before two performances at Shakespeare's Globe theatre, London and at Oxfam House in Oxford.
Creation Theatre Company Executive Director, James Erskine, said: - "Creation thrives on presenting our audiences with unique theatrical events and here we have brought world-class theatre to Oxford. It's amazing to witness such dynamic theatre all the way from Ramallah on our doorstep."
Barbara Stocking, CEO of Oxfam said, "Oxfam is delighted to be supporting Creation Theatre and Globe to Globe, bringing this incredible opportunity to Oxford. Oxfam celebrates 70 years of working with others to end poverty and injustice around the world this autumn and it is a pleasure to be part of this inspiring and diverse cultural celebration here in our home city.
Two more performances complete the mini-season: Shakespeare's The Taming of The Shrew, which will be performed in Urdu by Lahore's Theatre Wallay on Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 May at the North Wall Arts Centre and Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors which will be performed in Dari Persian by Afghan theatre company Roy-e-Sabz on Wednesday 6 June at the Sheldonian Theatre
